Cultural Bus Trip Educates and Inspires

The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library Cultural Bus Trips have a tradition of visiting places that challenge and inspire—and the recent bus trip to the Annenberg Space for Photography and the Armand Hammer museum was no exception.

The bus trip’s first stop was the Armand Hammer Museum in Westwood, to take in the “Made in LA” exhibit—featuring 32 artists from the greater Los Angeles area. A broad range of drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography, performance, and installations engaged and highlighted vital aspects of contemporary culture. Lunch was eaten in the Hammer’s airy and light-filled courtyard, and trip participants enjoyed the sculptural chairs which challenged not only notions of art, but of balance as well.

The second stop was the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City, where the group viewed “Not an Ostrich: And Other Images From America’s Library,” a curated collection of 500 images permanently housed at the Library of Congress. Spanning the history of photography and the United States, the exhibit was a fascinating and detailed look at life in America, with images from politics, working life, news events, and more. The exhibit included a film, America’s Library; an in-depth look at the historical context of the photos and the process of selecting each image.

The happy trip-goers were back at the Newbury Park Library by five; grateful to have had the chance to see and learn so much, all while avoiding driving and parking. At just $25 a person, this was one of the best values yet; keep an eye out for upcoming trips and your chance for a stress-free cultural adventure!
