To celebrate National Library Lovers’ month, Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library (FTOL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the Thousand Oaks Library with support services and intellectual and cultural enrichment programs, invites the community to attend its free open house event on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1-4 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks Grant R. Brimhall Library located at 1401 E. Janss Road in Thousand Oaks, California.
The Friends’ group has recently opened a significantly expanded Friends’ Bookshop in the Thousand Oaks library. The Bookshop, which replaces the group’s semi-annual sales, is open daily whenever the Library is open and offers over 15,000 items for sale every day. Items include used books, both fiction and nonfiction, DVDs, CDs, and children’s books at bargain prices, many for less than $1.
The Open House event is designed for everyone in the community to enjoy, and will feature a kids’ activity zone with a bookmark-making station and library treasure hunt; a story hour with service dogs; guest speakers and authors; library tours; multiple raffles and prize packages; and presentations on how FTOL efforts fund special programs that support the library community.
“We are extremely excited about our expanded Friends’ Bookshop space and the fact that we can offer so many books to our community at such a low cost” said Dick Piernot, President. “The Thousand Oaks Library provides so much to the community through books, events, technology stations and recreational space that there’s really something for everyone, and we are happy to provide funding for many of these special programs. We hope our community will walk away with a newfound enthusiasm for all the library has to offer and an understanding of the critical support we provide to help maintain and improve its resources.”
FTOL’s efforts — run exclusively by volunteers — and financial support for the library have made possible the acquisition and/or sponsorship of programs and resources such as e-books, after-school and summer reading programs, computer projection systems, the “One City, One Book” program, the 3,600-gallon aquarium, audio/visual equipment, and much more.
This community event is free and open to all. Upon entering the main entrance to the library, guests will be greeted by FTOL volunteers, who will be handing out folders containing a schedule of Open House events, “Buy one, get one free” coupons, and information about the Friends and the library.
