The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library are proud to sponsor this year’s “Thousand Oaks Reads: One City, One Book” program. This year’s title, The Honey Bus by Meredith May, is a beautiful memoir and coming of age family story in which the author’s grandfather imparts the magic and wisdom of nature through the art of beekeeping. The bees teach May about family and community, helping her escape a troubled family and find a life purpose of her own.

The book touches not only on themes of family and relationships, but also on environmental issues and the importance of ensuring the survival of bees, nature’s essential pollinators, who in turn ensure the survival of so many plant species and life on earth.

The programming this year is rich and broad; we hope you’ll join us at the Kickoff Celebration on Saturday, February 29th at the Grant Brimhall Library from 1-4 pm, for bee-themed crafts, “inside the hive” virtual reality, and a special display from the LA Beekeepers’ Association. And stay for a very special performance of Flight of the Bumblebee by the Newbury Park High School Orchestra!

Our marquee movie event this year is a special screening of The Biggest Little Farm, with a guest appearance by filmmaker/director (and farmer) John Chester, who will also sign copies of his children’s book from the movie, Saving Emma the Pig. Members of the Friends of the Library will receive priority seating for this event by showing proof of membership at the door (arrive no later than 6:30).

In addition to this and many other bee- and environmentally themed movies, there are a wide range of programs planned, from a Master Gardener presentation on bees in the garden to the rollicking sounds and stories of the Honey Whiskey Trio, with tours and panels and educational opportunities in between.

And of course, it all winds up with the traditional author event, so mark your calendars now for Sunday, April 25th at 2 pm, where Meredith May will speak about her book at the Fred Kavli Center. Friends of the Library also receive priority admission for this event, so keep your eyes open for further information on the library website.

It’s our privilege to be the exclusive sponsors of One City, One Book—all programs are brought to the community free of charge. Don’t miss out on the book, the programs, and the city-wide conversation—come down and check out your copy of The Honey Bus today, and we hope to see you at an event soon!
