The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library have been recognized for their service to the library by the City of Thousand Oaks, in a proclamation issued October 18, 2020, announcing National Friends of Libraries Week. The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library are honored by this recognition, and the proclamation will be carefully preserved with the Friends’ awards and archives.

The Friends, of course, are dedicated to the furtherance of the library’s goals and its status in the community, and it is so gratifying to be recognized for the work we do. As library advocates, we were also gratified by the City Council’s affirmation that the library is the cornerstone of the community, providing the ideal educational environment and opportunities for all to enjoy lifelong learning.

We were also very fortunate to have our archivist and grant writer Sue Soy present to the Council during the public comments segment of the City Council meeting on October 13, 2020. You can see Sue’s presentation at this link: http://toaks.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=8&clip_id=2531 (fast-forward to 44:00 in the meeting). Sue did a wonderful presentation, and we hope you’ll have a chance to view it!

The text of the proclamation is below; we are deeply grateful to the City and the City Council for this recognition.

Proclamation in Honor of Friends of the Library Week

Whereas, Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library raises the funds that enable our library to provide outstanding programming; much-needed equipment and technology; support for children’s summer reading and the One City, One Book program; and special events throughout the year; and

Whereas, the work of the Friends highlights on an ongoing basis the fact that our library is the cornerstone of the community, providing opportunities for all to engage in the joy of life-long learning and connect with the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to the present; and

Whereas, the Friends understand the critical importance of well-funded libraries and advocate to ensure that our library gets the resources it needs to provide a wide variety of services to all ages, including access to print and digital materials along with experts assistance in research, readers’ advisory, and children’s services; and

Whereas, the Friends’ funding made possible the expansion of virtual library materials and services, allowing the library to continue to serve the community during the shutdown, before curbside service was enabled; and

Whereas, the Friends’ gift of their time and commitment to the library sets an example for all in how volunteerism leads to positive civic engagement and the betterment of our community; and

Whereas, the City of Thousand Oaks’ Grant R. Brimhall Library provides an ideal educational setting to engage with our residents through presentations and discussions, children’s games and activities, displays, and hands-on workshops.

Therefore I, Al Adam, mayor of the City of Thousand oaks, on behalf of the entire City Council proclaim October 18025, 2020, as

Friends of the Library Week

And urges everyone to support the Friends of the Library by becoming a member, and to thank them for all they do to make the library the intellectual and cultural heart of the community.”
