June is National Aquarium Month, and the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library are raising funds to support the maintenance of the amazing salt-water aquarium in the Library.

The 3600-gallon salt-water aquarium was donated by the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library and enhances the walkway between the adult and children’s services areas. The aquarium is 18 feet wide and 5 feet tall and is home to a variety of different species of fish from all over the world. The reef is man-made and painted to represent coral from various oceans.

The aquarium is the most popular continuing exhibit in the library. During the library’s open hours you can see people of all ages congregated in front of the tank: Children pointing out a favorite fish and adults finding serenity in the soothing movement of the water and the aquarium’s inhabitants. It’s a happy place.

To keep the aquarium happy on the inside, a professional aquarium keeper (an “aquarist”) works regularly to ensure water quality, oxygen levels, a clean tank, and proper temperature—and of course, to make sure that every one of the residents of this complicated ecosystem is healthy and plays well with others.

The Friends support this vital work by raising $10,000 each year dedicated solely to the maintenance of the aquarium. This year we are asking for your support for that effort. Our in-library bookshop has been closed for fourteen months which significantly affects our revenue. If you enjoy the aquarium, please consider donating to help us ensure that the aquarium stays robust and healthy.
