It’s spring, and thoughts turn to birds, blooms, basketball, and oh yes—taxes. We often receive inquiries at this time of year, asking whether we accept donations of used books for tax purposes. We sure do, but keep in mind that donations for your 2016 tax return had to be submitted by December 31, 2016. If you donate your books this April, that cruelest of months for taxes, you will be able to deduct them on your 2017 tax return.
However, it’s never too early to get a start on next year’s pain, er, taxes, so please, keep us in mind when you are clearing out your bookshelves. The library staff will happily give you a receipt for tax purposes, Uncle Sam will happily give you a write-off, and the Friends will happily turn your donations into materials and programming for the library. A win-win for everyone!
